Mistakes of the past…

by The Green Greek

History is a great teacher for the future.

We learn a lot about ourselves from our mistakes, the way we function and think, society and its structures, and how other people function. These are the mistakes that will lead us to frictions, criticisms, disagreements and injustices, but it is up to us to turn them into knowledge and use them to form a wider concept that will lead us closer to fulfillment. If we don’t correct them, we are doomed to repeat them.

The past…

The unjust prohibition of cannabis started in different parts of the world in the 18th century, while in Greece the first movement was in 1890. But it was the year 1925 that it was declared illegal, worldwide, by the “League of Nations”, an organization that after the World War II, was transformed to ” United Nations ”, starting a domino of bans around the globe. In 1937, USA followed, through political and social propaganda, further sealing the injustice towards a precious plant and man himself. This movement was based on the ignorance of people, who were quickly manipulated and driven to the fear that the various organizations and interests cultivated, renouncing cannabis and believing those who represented him. Politicians believed experts and scientists, who, in turn, -supported by economic and other interests- have transformed a plant, into an enemy of society. The methods of mass deception are known, since they have been repeated from ancient times till today. Fear raises many evils and leads us to the wrong conclusions. The distortion of reality, in order to control society and the economy, has always served as a tool for those who knew the truth, but also for those who never wanted to face it.

The “War against Drugs”…

Each action brings a reaction, both in our society and in us. The more someone believes he is mistreated or threatened, the greater and more desperate his reaction will be. But this reaction will also cause action by those who question the system and its structure, leading to conflict and violence. This is how the famous “war on drugs” has started in 1971, but it had rather the opposite results! In the nearly half a century that followed, illegal trade has flourished, mortality rates have risen, violence grew uncontrolled, people’s lives and properties were destroyed, and society split in two. The price of both drugs and cannabis skyrocketed, prisons were filled and people and their families were stigmatized and destroyed along with prosperity and growth. It was finally this war that brought everything we feared, for it was our fear that brought the war.

Reversal….

Through that whirlwind of events, several people have tried to understand and correct the injustice. They challenged bans and prejudice, opposed to mass and logic and explored this plant, its properties, ingredients and benefits. They shattered the wall of prejudice and wanted to share their knowledge with the world. They quickly became stigmatized as activists, dangerous, enemies of society and marginalized, so that their voice could not be heard. But truth always comes into light, no matter how delayed or blocked. Those who stood against the ban and the reaction, have worked hard, experimented, searched, and reached the truth even if it was illegal to do so. One scientific study succeeded the other and discoveries, in both the medical and the psychological field, started to create a rushing torrent that was about to change things on a global scale. Doctors, academics, scientists and politicians realized the benefits of cannabis and de-lionized the myths that were built all those years. Even then, conservative voices hindered the development of society, highlighting the concerns and prejudices that they, themselves, have created. How far back or forth a society may go is a collective decision and it concerns us all. The quest for truth has always been an inherent component of our society and the driving force of evolution.

Nothing stays hidden under the sun

Today, there is an upgraded global view on cannabis and how much it can affect events and developments. Health, economy, environment and technology can greatly benefit by wisely taking advantage of this new knowledge we have acquired. Only then we may say that we have benefit from our mistakes. It was them, that led us to the wisdom and self-awareness we have today. Now, it is up to us to learn from them and not repeat them. Let’s never make the same mistakes. Only then, will we be led to our prosperity and fulfillment. The timing is favorable and the conditions are ideal for progressing and making our society better. Let us move with confidence this time and let our mistakes teach us…

History is only written once. Let’s write it right this time…
