Greece has a global peculiarity. It has the longest-standing connection of music to cannabis than any other country in the world. The rebetiko!
The ban on cannabis began in the 30s, after internal and external pressures, dragging along the songs that had been written about it. This, however, did not stand in the way of a multitude of rebetiko artists to continue to sing them and despite the prohibitions of the interwar period and the censorship of the following decades, they stood the test of time and many of them were loved and sang.
So we decided to make a celebration as a thank you to these reverent figures of discography who kept alive the seed of rebetiko and cannabis through their insurmountable creations, with a magnificent concert on April 20, 2019 at the Palaio Faliro Indoor Hall (Tae Kwon Do)!
A musical journey that starts from the end of the 19th century, makes a passage from Smyrna and Piraeus, is heading with the first rebetika of the era of prohibition and continues in the post-war period with songs that kept alive this, unique internationally, music!
«… These songs that we are discussing now, which, due to their lyrics of course, the state power, a part of the public, even our colleagues of another musical genre, considered for years disrespectful and rubbish of the underworld, antisocial and dangerous. Just as they thought we were the same ones who wrote them and sang them. But let us all finally learn that these songs, taken from the inspirations and souls of afflicted, innocent and honest workers of folk music, will live eternally, always dragging with them the dobrosy, the pride and the truth of their art”.

The songs in this three-hour exciting tsarka, are played by a six-member rebetiko orchestra of bouzoukobaglamades and a four-member band of Smyrneika instruments and are accompanied by performers who love them as something special and sacred.
Get ready for many surprises with chants as they were before they were censored, others that have never been set to music, as well as stories unknown to the general public!
