Legalize Cannabis Protestival 2019

15th Athens Anti-Prohibition Festival

Saturday 11 May 2019

Music rally Pl. Kotzia, Monastiraki, Thissio

4.20pm – 1am

Despite any piecemeal progress of the last 3 years, Cannabis is still illegal. Patients do not legally find their medicine, users are considered criminals, professionals operate in grey areas, Greek producers are held hostage and the state has huge lost profits. The pre-election announcements and pledges of parties and candidates do not include Cannabis and patients’ demands.

But we vote for Cannabis!

Legality, entrepreneurship and treatment.

We demand decriminalization of the possession and home cultivation for individual use, operation of non-profit clubs and licensed points of sale, full service of the needs of patients and establishment of the patient’s card, a comprehensive and modern model of legal regulation of the production and distribution of cannabis for medical, euphoric, nutritional and industrial use.

More information:

Undoubtedly 2019 will be the year of Cannabis globally. More and more countries are changing their policies, decriminalizing possession for personal use and domestic farming, and regulating the purchase, production and distribution of food, pharmaceutical and euphoric cannabis products. In Greece, good intentions have not been supported by courageous actions and reforms that will bring us to the forefront of global industry, but also that will ensure the rights and health of patients and consumers.

Certainly in the last 3 years we have seen some progress in regulating the cultivation of industrial hemp, but also in the institutionalization of the conditions and procedures for the licensing of the production of medicinal products from hemp.. The interest of farmers is increasing, already in 2018 more than 600 acres were cultivated for industrial hemp, and we have also seen huge interest in investments in medicinal cannabis since there are more than 45 applications to the General Secretariat of Industry. Also within a year more than 70 specialized cannabis stores have opened, while cannabis products have spread to many nutrition and wellness stores.

However ordinary cannabis users are still arrested, as are cannabis-growing patients. No patient has yet received an imported cannabis drug, although they have been theoretically allowed to be imported since 2017. The EOF throws the ball to the pharmaceutical companies that they have not yet expressed interest in importing a drug, but also to the patients that they have not applied for enough approved cannabis drugs. Industrial hemp is also experiencing serious delays in improving the institutional framework for cultivation and creating the corresponding one for processing.

Possession of cannabis for personal use is still a crime (misdemeanor), as is domestic farming. This is a criminal policy that is holding the hundreds of thousands of Cannabis users in Greece hostage to the organized crime it treasures. It is a failed policy based on repression instead of prevention and has cost us.

The decriminalization of the occupation for personal use has never come, despite all the announcements and political commitments, and even though we have the Prime Minister’s signature on our long-standing demands since 2010. The removal of the conservative government partner has not brought any change and the government is still calculating the “political cost” that such a proposal will bring in view of the upcoming elections. What he has not realised is that the political cost is on the backs of those who still support prohibitive and repressive policies , and this should also be reflected in the ballot boxes.

Around the world Cannabis policies are changing, with medical, pharmaceutical and nutritional use at the forefront, while there are not a few countries that are preparing to adopt a comprehensive regulation of cannabis for adult citizens of their country along the lines of Uruguay, Canada and 10 U.S. states. Myths are debunked and demonization gives way to scientific data. Policies based on disinformation and obsession are replaced by approaches that reduce harm, protect public health and weaken organised crime.

Free Cannabis relieves and heals patients, helps people become independent of addictive drugs or other substances, creates jobs and a rapidly growing sector of the global economy. Its ban increases organised crime, intensifies inequalities and increases the damage to our fellow human beings and society.

The criminalization of possession and domestic cultivation of Cannabis for personal use is unconstitutional, while the criminalisation of self-insult is an insult to our legal culture. Denying a patient his treatment is criminal and inhumane. Cannabis Needs to Be Regulated comprehensively and comprehensively by an independent body that will coordinate and implement policies for the production and distribution of cannabis for medical, nutritional, euphoric and industrial use. The overall regulation of the plant and the responsible information of patients and doctors would fill the gap that arises from the lack of access to cannabis medicines due to obstruction on the part of the state.

The political cost is on the backs of those who still support the disastrous prohibitionist policies that have done more damage to society than Cannabis itself. The time for a modern and more effective framework for Cannabis is now.

We have repeatedly sent comments and suggestions to the Administration conveying the anxiety of patients, users and ordinary citizens, as well as the international good practices regarding the regulation of cannabis. We declare that we vote for Cannabis and invite those who expect to represent society to take a stand.

We break taboos and prejudices, because truth is the best prevention.

All together we can!
